Asian Womens Group

The idea to set up an Asian Womens Group came about when local health visitors were contacted by several Asian women who recently moved to Filton and Stoke Gifford.

They felt isolated in their neighbourhood, and wanted to find out if there were any Asian communities in South Gloucestershire.

The health visitors consulted the local Community Development Worker from South Gloucestershire Council, Marion Jones, who arranged some meetings with these women and gathered some information from them.

As a result, Marian contacted SGAP to see if we could help these women, by asking us to formally create an Asian Womens Group, which we have recently agreed to do, with assistance from the Council.

Sangeeta Dewan, SGAP Co-opted member and Bollywood Singing teacher, is coordinating this group.

Having been in a similar position when she moved to Bradley Stoke, she can identify with the experiences of these women. She has already arranged a series of meetings and is trying to make it as relaxing and enjoyable an experience as possible in order to help them integrate into the community.

The meetings are at St. Michaels old school rooms (Stoke Gifford) and Jubilee Center (Bradley Stoke) from 1.00pm-3.00pm (crèche worker is available to help look after young children).

For further information, please contact Anju Patel in SGAP office on 01454 865126 or email sgap.office@googlemail.com.

Yate Volunteer Centre (Yate Voluntary Link)

Volunteer Centres provide a service in the community for people who are volunteers or want to volunteer and groups that need to recruit volunteers. In our office base at Yate Library we hold information about over 150 opportunities in all different types of voluntary work across South Gloucestershire and Bristol. Most of these opportunities are also uploaded to the Do-it! Website, a national database for volunteering and our own website.

We offer one-to-one interviews with volunteers to help them find the right voluntary work to suit their skills and interests and during the year we also offer training sessions for volunteers and volunteer organisers. We can also advise on best practice and how to recruit volunteers more effectively.

Yate Voluntary Link also has a volunteer-led Outreach Project, which takes the Volunteer Centre’s services into the wider communities surrounding Yate, as well as the community centres in Yate and the Sodburys and it is intended, in the future, to include local businesses.

Our office is also home to the Young Bristol Action, South Gloucestershire Millennium Volunteers Project which works with young people aged 16 –24, helping them find voluntary work, set up projects of their own and gain skills and confidence through training workshops, taster sessions and residential workshops away from home.

As a Volunteer Centre we are pleased to work in partnership with our associate Volunteer Centres in Thornbury and Patchway, aiming to raise the profile of volunteering across South Gloucestershire.

For more information about volunteering or volunteer recruitment, please call Carole Zorzo on 01454 324102, email yatevb@care4free.net. Our website address is www.yatevoluntarylink.org.uk.

For information about the Millennium Volunteers project call Tom Blower on 01454 317289 or email mv_southglos@yahoo.co.uk.
