SOME POPULAR PAST EVENTS

Following section gives a brief review of some of our past events/ activities, that were well received:

Antakshari - 25th February 2006

The Antakshari event was thoroughly enjoyed by our enthusiastic SGAP members. The young members joined the action and it was a good competition in the end. The teams Asha, Usha and Lata had a very good time singing the old as well as the latest bollywood numbers. Vijay Patel and Meera Adodara hosted the show very well. Thanks to Anand who had put in a lot of efforts to edit the clips and kept the scores!

Bhangra Dance Performance

Annual Show 2005 - Bhangra Dance performance

Bhangra is a lively form of folk music and dance that originates from Punjab.

People traditionally performed Bhangra when celebrating the harvest. During Bhangra, people sing Punjabi Boliyaan lyrics, at least one person plays the dhol drum, and other people may play the flute, dholak drum, or other musical instruments.

While Bhangra began as a part of harvest festival celebrations, it eventually became a part of such diverse occasions as weddings and New Year celebrations. Primarily men perform Bhangra, while the ladies performed their own fierce, yet elegent, dance called Giddha.

The men wear the turban, lungi (long cloth wrapped around the waist), and kurta, while the women, when performing Giddha, wear the salvar kameez accompanied by their bright coloured duppattas.

During the last thirty years, Bhangra has enjoyed a surge in popularity worldwide, both in traditional form and as a fusion with genres such as hip-hop, house, and reggae - as Bhangra continues to move into mainstream culture.

If you will like us to consider Bhangra sessions, please send us your details, by contacting the following members of the Bhangra Dance Performance Team:
