Bollywood Dance News

2005 was an extremely busy year for the SGAP Bollywood dance crew. In addition to performing at the Bristol Zoo, Annual Show and the AGMs they participated in the Yate Talent Show ‘Reach for the Stars’ co-sponsored by GWR FM, the Weston Super Mare Festival of Music and Dance and the Bradley Stoke Community Festival. They have done everyone proud by winning a shield at the WSM festival and prize for the ‘Best Dressed Group’ at Reach for the Stars!

Also, the Bollywood Divas presented a folk dance (the Dandia Raas) at Wick’s Golden Valley on 19th March 2006 amidst nature.

Yate Talent Show Winning the trophy

In total, the SGAP Bollywood dance crew participated in over 10 events—that’s under 1 a month..in addition to attending the classes! Quite an achievement – come to think of it.

Performances at such events remains a high priority for SGAP, so when you join our dance classes, your child gets the opportunity of performing at such prestigious events. This leads to tremendous confidence building. For details see the diary of forthcoming events.

Tabla Classes

Tabla is an important instrument in Indian music. It was invented in the 14th Century A.D., and popular in the 18th Century onwards. Since then it's popularity started gaining ground by enlarge. Tabla is known as an accompany instrument, but nevertheless Tabla also has its own identity as a solo instrument.

Tabla is also widely used with vocal, instrumental music and with north Indian Dance. Ladies too have started learning the art of playing Tabla. It makes the dance and music more attractive, melodious and enchanting. It has become very popular throughout India and abroad. It requires true dedication to the style of playing this instrument. Over the last twenty years or more it's sound has attracted the attention of a large number of students and lovers of music alike globally.

In South Gloucestershire and North Bristol we are very lucky to have a number of enthusiasts and lovers of art who can learn under the expert guidance of Tapan Roy. SGAP organises lessons for enthusiasts and new learners with Tapanji, who has built up a formidable reputation as both a teacher and performer. His skills are in great demand from all over Britain and he gives lessons in Tabla to pupils in Bath, Bristol and surrounding areas.

SGAP has run Tabla classes for several years, but these are currently suspended (although the lessons are available directly, on private basis) .

Bharat Natyam Indian classical dance

Bharat Natyam is one of the most popular and major classical dance style's of India. It originated in Tamil Nadu and has kept an unbroken tradition that lays stress on complex rhythmic patterns. It deploys a graceful style based on geometric movements, forceful footwork and facial expressions. Accompanied primarily by traditional South Indian vocals, it employs Carnatic music, and instruments, especially drums (mridangam).

A short trial in spring 2006 proved this dance style to be a very popular and a group of students performed an uplifting dance at the Annual show in November 2006.
